Place the presenter beside the screen instead of over it
Putting the presenter beside the demonstration can free a crowded corner of the interface. It also gives the screen less space, so the right layout depends on whether viewers can still read the task.
Start with the interface, not the decoration
Identify every area the lesson needs: navigation, the active control and the result. If the demonstration requires both ends of a wide table, putting it into half the frame may be worse than a small camera inset. Consider showing the presenter only during introductions or explanations.
Sketch the final frame at the actual player size. A screen panel that looks generous on a large editing monitor may make text unreadable on a phone. Decide which material deserves most of the frame before recording.
Keep the sources independent when you need flexibility
For a fully rearrangeable composition, retain separate camera and screen footage. A Reel recording that already has the camera rendered over the screen is a composite; moving that camera in an editor does not automatically reveal the covered interface. Plan the layout before capture or record suitable independent material.
Match the two recordings with an obvious spoken or visual cue if they were captured separately. Then check later in the clip as well as at the beginning. Do not assume two long recordings stay perfectly aligned because their first frames match.
- Choose the smallest screen region that still explains the task.
- Capture usable screen and presenter material for the intended layout.
- Align speech and visible actions in the editor.
- Inspect the final frame for cropped controls and unreadable text.
Know what a split-screen preset does
Apple’s iMovie Mac procedure places one clip above another, then uses Video Overlay Settings > Split Screen. Its documentation explicitly describes cropped versions of both clips. Choose a position and inspect the preview rather than assuming the preset fits each complete source.
If the full interface must remain visible, use a layout tool that can fit the screen within its panel, allow margins, or switch back to a full-screen view. A neat edge-to-edge design is not worth hiding a button that the narration asks viewers to press.
Use a real task to judge the result
For a presenter explaining a chart, the camera might occupy a narrow panel while the chart fills the remaining area. During a detailed settings step, remove the presenter panel or show the screen alone. Consistent purpose matters more than keeping one layout throughout.
Export a representative segment and view it at ordinary size. Check captions, cursor and presenter gestures together. Arte Soft publishes Reel; the split-screen assembly described here belongs to the editor, not an assumed Reel export layout feature.
Can I move the camera out of an already combined recording?
Not as an independent layer unless you retained separate footage or the recording project provides it. Covered screen content is not automatically recoverable.
Does iMovie Split Screen preserve the full screen image?
The documented effect crops the clips. Inspect the result and choose another layout when essential controls would be lost.
