Fix a Mac recorder’s screen-capture permission
When a Mac recorder cannot see the screen, first establish which app is running and whether it has the relevant permission. Avoid resetting every privacy setting or deleting the app as a first step. A screen permission, microphone permission and camera permission answer different requests.
Identify the application that needs access
Note the recorder name, version and how you launched it. A desktop application and a browser-based recorder can be separate permission cases. If you have multiple copies or a development build, do not assume an old permission entry describes the copy currently running.
Use a harmless desktop with a large sample label for the test. Close sensitive documents before granting capture access. Screen access is a deliberate permission, not a troubleshooting checkbox that should be enabled for every item in the list.
Check the current Mac settings
Apple’s current guide places screen and audio access under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. Review the entry for the intended app and respond to its supported authorisation prompt. Labels can differ on older macOS versions.
Return to the recorder and try its capture controls again. If the operating system or application asks for a restart, follow that instruction. Do not use unrelated terminal resets or disable security features just because a first attempt failed.
Test picture independently of sound
Record the safe label and one visible window movement. Stop and open the saved file. If the picture is correct but narration is silent, investigate microphone input separately. If the camera is missing, inspect camera permission and the chosen camera mode.
A protected source can also refuse capture. If a blank result occurs only in one app while the harmless desktop test succeeds, that is different from a globally denied screen permission. Do not try to bypass content protection.
Inspect scope and the chosen display
A permitted recorder can still capture the wrong monitor or region. Compare the saved sample against the selected display before changing permissions again. If the desktop test is black everywhere, keep the exact error and inspect the recorder’s supported OS/version requirements.
On a managed Mac, some choices may be controlled by the organisation. Ask its administrator for the approved workflow instead of trying to defeat management. A recording need does not establish authority to change workplace device policy.
Prepare a useful support report
Record the macOS version, recorder version, selected display, permission state and result of the harmless sample. Describe whether the issue affects all content or a single source. Avoid sending a screenshot that includes private application names or unrelated security details.
Preserve any existing recording while troubleshooting. Reinstalling or clearing application data can complicate diagnosis and may affect unsent files. Escalate with a small reproduction before making destructive changes that the publisher has not requested.
Does screen access also enable my microphone?
No. Check the microphone’s input route and access separately.
The desktop records but one protected app is blank. Is permission still wrong?
It may be a source restriction instead. Use the safe test to distinguish scope and permission problems; do not bypass protection.
