Getting a clean MP4 out of an iPhone screen recording
The recording is only useful once it is somewhere you can use it. Reel writes MP4 straight to your library, which is the format every editor and platform accepts without conversion. Here is how to get it out intact.
Where it lands
On iPhone and iPad, in the Photos library, with a timestamp. On Mac, in the folder you chose in Settings. There is no in-app gallery to export from; the file is already a file.
Why MP4
MOV is Apple's container; MP4 is everyone's. The video inside is the same H.264, but an MP4 uploads to any platform and opens in any editor on any system without a conversion step. Reel writes MP4 for that reason.
Moving it without losing quality
- AirDrop to a Mac: sends the original file, no re-encoding.
- iCloud Photos: syncs the original if "Download and Keep Originals" is on in Photos settings on the Mac.
- Messages, WhatsApp, Mail: re-compress. Fine for sharing, wrong for editing.
- Files app → save to a folder: keeps the original and puts it where a desktop app can reach it.
Two audio tracks
If you recorded with single-track off, the MP4 has two audio tracks. Photos plays the first; an editor shows both. Nothing is lost — it is just not audible until you open it somewhere that understands multiple tracks.
