Why a screen recording shows black video
Black video is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The whole file may be blank, one video rectangle may be dark, or a particular player may fail to display an otherwise usable file. Each observation points to a different next step.
Describe exactly what is black
Play the saved original and look for the cursor, camera inset, application controls and sound. Note whether the black area covers everything or only a media player inside an otherwise normal interface. Check the beginning and a later point, rather than judging from a dark opening frame.
For example, a tutorial may show browser tabs and your narration but leave a streaming player black. That differs from capturing the wrong empty display, or from a file that opens correctly on one device but not another. Do not replace a specific observation with the broad label “the recorder is broken.”
Respect the content boundary
Apple warns that some apps do not allow recording of their content; its Mac guidance also names windows that may not be recordable. A dark protected area is not a reason to search for a capture bypass. Permission to watch content does not necessarily include permission or technical ability to record it.
Use your own sample video or an ordinary non-sensitive interface to test the recorder. If that records correctly while a particular service does not, you have narrowed the problem. You have not proved which protection the service uses, or that another recorder will capture it.
Check the intended capture area
On a Mac with several displays or capture modes, confirm which area the chosen recorder is capturing. Compare its preview, if available, with the final short recording. A window that was moved, minimized or replaced during the take deserves a separate test in that same state.
Reel’s Mac workflow captures a display; this guide does not imply it has an arbitrary third-party window picker. Check the relevant recorder’s own selection controls. Changing a camera setting will not correct a screen-source mismatch.
Use a controlled comparison
Change one thing at a time. Otherwise a successful second take will not tell you whether the source, capture area or playback path changed.
- Keep the original and note the failing timestamp.
- Record a harmless screen with visible movement.
- Play that test locally and compare it with the failed original.
- If only one app fails, consult its current recording restrictions.
- If every capture fails, check permissions and selection before another long take.
Do not confuse capture with delivery
If the original plays but a shared copy is black, compare the actual files and the receiving player. A file extension alone does not establish codec support. Re-export a copy through a compatible editor only after confirming that the original contains the picture you need.
A useful report includes the device and OS, recorder, source app, whether the whole frame is black, and whether the harmless test works. That is enough to start a focused investigation without distributing protected or private footage.
Does sound with black video prove DRM?
No. It is compatible with several causes. Compare a harmless source and check the source app’s documentation before drawing that conclusion.
Can Reel bypass a blocked video window?
No bypass is promised here. Use material you are allowed and able to capture, or obtain an authorized source file.
Should I delete the original?
Keep it while diagnosing. A playback or delivery problem can make an existing picture appear missing.
